1. Meetings for the year, identifying Required Program:

Sept 10, 2012: Officers Training and Program Planning Themes
We celebrated receiving the 2011-2012 Outstanding Chapter Award &Undergraduate Research Project Award.
Sept 17, 2012: Business Meeting and Program: A Power Point of highlights from Conclave was presented by Krista Hillenbrand, official delegate. The gallery of Conclave slides from the KON website were shown. Celebration of Awards.
Oct 29, 2012: REQUIRED PROGRAM-PART 1-Bullying Initiative: Workplace Bullying, Girls Bullying and Cyber-Bullying. Handouts of definitions and types of bullying were used for discussion.
Nov 12, 2012: Commitment to Writing and Leadership: Power Point and book review of Perseverance by Dr. Margaret Wheatley.
Dec 2, 2012: KON and C-N Association of Family and Consumer Sciences joint Christmas Cookie Swap. FCS majors were invited and all FCS faculty attended. Prizes were given for most nutritious, best-tasting, and best looking cookies..

Jan 28, 2013: Chapter business meeting. Chapter initiatives and meeting dates were discussed and finalized. Criteria for medallion award and scholarships reviewed.
Feb 18, 2013: REQUIRED PROGRAM-PART 2: KON Bullying Initiative: Preventing Workplace Bullying. A short video from CRM showing vignettes that illustrate workplace bullying and behaviors was viewed. Handouts illustrating differences in identifying Harassment and Workplace Bullying and Passive, Assertive, and Bully/Aggressive behavior increased our awareness of bullying situations.
Mar 11, 2013: Celebrating C-N Community: KON members had the opportunity to attend the campus and community-wide tree-planting ceremony and celebration honoring Carson-Newman’s name change to Carson-Newman University. Over 500 oak trees were distributed to campus and local community attendees.
Mar 25, 2013: Chapter Initiation: Nine new student members were initiated. FCS faculty, parents, and grandparents of the initiates enjoyed the ceremony and reception that followed. FCS freshman that ranked in the top 25% of their class were invited and recognized during the initiation and reception that followed.
Apr 22, 2013: Focus on Undergraduate Student Research: Three Beta Xi members presented Power Points: (1) Taylor Foy: Bonners Scholar: “A Week of Service: The Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson City; (2) Krista Hillenbrand: Bonners Scholar: “Mossy Creek Health Expo: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Promote Health and Wellness among a Christian Liberal Arts Undergraduate College Population.” Our entire Blye-Poteat FCS building was used to host the event that featured guest speakers, healthy food demonstrations, stress management, nutrition education and financial wellness session. (3) Kaila Nelson: “Concept, Design Statement, and Completed work for Refurbishing and Re-Design of Computer Room and Recreation Room for C-N Men’s Dorm. Each student was presented a $30.00 honorarium from our KON Scholars Fund.

2. Campus or community projects, activities, or events:

Sept 10, 2012: Departmental Required Majors Meeting and Welcome Back Ice-Cream Social at Duncan Cooperative Mgt Lab. Kappa Beta Xi was honored for Awards received at Conclave and co-presidents shared about KON membership requirements and activities.
Sept 22, 2013: Community Project: Kappa Beta Xi participated in our annual C-N Operation In-As-Much Community Outreach Day where C-N students, faculty and staff work all day on Saturday to meet community needs. Seven of our members participated at various locations throughout the community.
Dec 2013: Participated in Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoeboxes. Prepared a shoebox of gifts for a young boy and one for a young girl.

Mar 12, 2013: Campus-wide project: Second Annual Mossy Creek Health Expo Sponsored by C-N SDA (Student Dietetic Association) and coordinated by Krista Hillenbrand, our co-president. This interdisciplinary approach to health/wellness promotion attracted over 10 program participants from across campus and the community. The health partners provided information and services on a variety of health topics from blood pressure checks to dietary counseling to advice on exercise and management of finances. Dr. Carroll and three KON members presented information on finances and the college student. Two new members were featured in foods demonstrations. Other members helped Krista with registration and other events. Over 150 attendees completed surveys and signed up for a variety of wellness related door prizes. At our last meeting of the year that focused on student research, Krista presented research findings from the surveys completed during the Health Expo.
Apr 10, 2013: Carson-Newman’s third annual Celebration of Excellence-Student Research, Creativity and Performance Day. The Research Day is an initiative of our Provost’s office with all classes cancelled for the day. C-N students are encouraged to participate as a presenter or viewer of presentations, projects, research, and exhibits. Our Department of Family and Consumer Sciences had 23 students that presented research, interior design projects, panel discussions, poster sessions, and creative projects. Their names and project titles were listed in the Carson-Newman Research Search Day program. Thirteen KON members presented.
Apr 11, 2013: C-N Honors Day and Chapel: KON member Hannah Reese was recognized as the outstanding FCS graduate and Chelsea Buchanan, new member, was recognized as the recipient of the KON Outstanding Sophomore Award presented by our chapter.
April 18, 2013, 3:00-5:00 p.m. FCS Advisory Board Meeting: Seven KON members presented Research.
Apr 18, 2013, 6:30 p.m. FCS Departmental Honors Banquet: KON members were recognized. Taylor Foy, Krista Hillenbrand, and Kaila Nelson received the KON Senior Medallion Award. The medallions were presented by our Provost, Dr. Kina Mallard and Associate Provost, Dr. Naomi Larsen. Graduating seniors were recognized and presented a gift by the department. Eight KON members are graduating: three of our FND graduates, Morgan, Krista, and Hannah have received Dietetic Internships; Taylor will be entering our MBA program and Von will be entering a Masters program.
Late April-Mid-May: Student Awards: Von Jesse was selected the Outstanding C-N Student Teacher for 2012-13. Krista Hillenbrand, a Bonners Scholar (students chosen must achieve 140 hours of service in addition to a regular course load) was awarded the Twin Pillars Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Service at the first annual Twin Pillars Award Banquet.
